We worked with the County Council to find out what families need to help them eat healthily, be active, and understand day-to-day barriers
Two new initiatives are being introduced:
Food Labs: providing resources and training for community organizations to help families explore new foods and diversify diets on a budget.
Inclusive Physical Activity: In collaboration with Hampshire Outdoors, supporting schools and clubs to ensure all children can access and participate in physical activities.
Parents concerned about their child’s weight can seek guidance from the County Council's health visiting or school nursing teams. More details are available on the Hampshire Healthy Families website.
Food Labs
Aim:
Provide resources for community settings to run free Food Lab sessions where families explore, try, cook, and eat new foods together
Train professionals to address picky eating and conduct evidence-based activities with families
Offer evidence-based resources for families, like sensory activities, recipes, and menu plans, to improve picky eating and reduce cost and waste
We plan to commission a specialist to develop resources and deliver training, using small grants to support sessions. If successful, we aim to embed this approach in the system by demonstrating its value and addressing barriers for families.
Movement for All
Aims:
Increase CYP participation in school and extracurricular PA, enhance enjoyment of PA, reduce inequalities in fundamental movement skills (FMS), and boost educational engagement for children with FMS gaps
Collaborate with PE and Sports lead in Hampshire to influence PE funding and lesson planning, focusing on movement and inclusion over traditional sports
Includes staff training and resources to transform school culture, creating more activity opportunities for all children, especially those with additional needs
