Healthwatch Hampshire (HWH) were commissioned by Hampshire County Council to interview families who face greater barriers accessing resources and support to promote a healthy lifestyle.
These interviews aimed to find out what initiatives families would find useful by identifying:
What topics or issues were important to their family?
What barriers they face in taking up support or getting involved in activities?
What could help remove the barriers and motivate them to take part?
We carried out:
3 clinic visits
5 visits to foodbanks/community pantries/organisations
Interviewing 27 families total
The lifestyle issues that were most important to parents were:
Healthy food on a budget
Picky eaters
Balanced diet
Barriers to healthy lifestyles for children with additional needs
Encouraging children to be active, sports and fun activities for children
Positive body image for young people
Problems with children’s sleep
Concerns about screen time
Families also provided ideas of what would be useful to them and these formed the basis of our recommendations to Hampshire County Council on the design of a future ‘healthy lifestyles’ programme.
